Been trying to think of what to say today…
It’s been five years ago today that Dan died…
They say it gets easier over time. They lie.
They say I’m strong. They lie.
They say he’d be proud of me. They lie.
They say tomorrow will be better. They lie. Tomorrow would have been his birthday.
For all of you whose fathers are still here with you… hug them today.
For all of you whose spouses are here with you, take their hand, look in their eyes and tell them how much you love them. Tell your friends, cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, grandparents, sisters, brothers… how much they matter to you. Do that today, in memory of Dan.
For everyone… take a small minute today to remember something special about Dan. He loved so many people, especially his family. Being in the military always kept us far from home, but we would plan months in advance, for trips to go home to see everyone. Sometimes we say we are too busy for a family get together or a family event. Maybe that’s not a good idea…
My heart may be empty now, but I thank God each day for my life with Dan. I thank God each day for my memories. I try each day to create another good memory. Some days are just harder than others…
I love you Dan…
Someday…
